We are finally emerging from a 2-day brutal, unprecedented San Francisco heat wave. Holy shit, it was hot! Yesterday was the hottest day ever recorded. Some parts of the city were as hot as 106 degrees! My neighborhood was 100.
Only a handful of public places in San Francisco have air-conditioning – they were opened as “cooling centers” with TVs so people could go and hang out there to escape the heat for a bit. The 3 city swimming pools offered free admission. However, 2 of the 3 are indoor pools and who in their right mind would want to go swimming inside a sweltering greenhouse??
On Friday night, the kids and took cold baths before bed but nonetheless I tossed and turned all night in sweaty sheets.
I took my daughter out to lunch yesterday and nearly died walking the 2 blocks uphill home. I contemplated buying a portable air conditioning unit for my bedroom but couldn’t justify the $400 price tag for something that would only be used once every 5 to 10 years.
Instead, I borrowed 2 fans from Mars. Turns out they were ineffective in such extreme heat and simply blew hot air around.
My plan to enjoy air-conditioning at a movie theater yesterday in a nearby city proved to be a good one. Hayden, my daughter, and I went to see the 40th anniversary re-release of Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind while sipping Slurpees. Sitting in a cool and darkened movie theater was a slice of heaven.
I made ice before we went to the movie so that we could enjoy margaritas last night after the movie. However, the heat had really gotten to me while we were at the grocery store buying margarita fixings: I was slurring my words and losing my balance. It was bizarre.
Once at home, I decided I should stick to iced sparkling water.
Last night was another horrendous sleepless night. I set one fan up in the kids’ bedroom – miraculously, they slept fine! Hayden and I slept buck naked with the other fan blowing directly on us but barely slept at all. No surprise: The thermostat said 92 degrees inside the house. Finally, at 1 in the morning, I got up to get a wet wash cloth to wrap around my neck. It was the most effective thing I’d tried… which isn’t saying much.
Finally, around 10 this morning, the heat wave started breaking. Hallelujah! Today was uncharacteristically warm but not nearly as bad. My home thermostat says it’s now 77 degrees inside the house. I’m looking forward to sleeping much better tonight!
We couldn’t go hiking today as planned due to the heat. We were disappointed but are planning to go next weekend instead.
Hayden left around 11 this morning but will be coming back tomorrow. I told him I’d like to celebrate my birthday with him and asked him when. We decided on Thursday night.
I don’t think he’s a big “birthday” person. I am. His birthday is in early February; I started asking him about his birthday in mid January. I told him I wanted to bake him a cake. He was planning to take the day off work and I told him I’d take the day off, too. But he broke up with me 1 week before his birthday so I didn’t get the chance to celebrate with him.
I’ll be having a birthday dinner with Mars and the kids on Tuesday night before I leave town, with my family on Wednesday night, and then with Hayden on Thursday night when I return to San Francisco.
Hayden asked me where I wanted to go for my birthday celebration dinner and I simply said, “I don’t know. Somewhere we haven’t gone before.” I have no idea, really.
I decided to keep 2 of the 5 items from my personal stylist shipment. Both are long-sleeved tops. However, considering the uncharacteristic heat that will last for the next few days, I won’t be able to wear either of them anytime soon. I won’t be sporting new clothes on my birthday, after all.
Seth, the OkCupid guy I met once last September, keeps sending me frequent messages through OkCupid. I find this extremely odd considering we are Facebook friends (why not send a message through there?) and because I haven’t responded to a single OkCupid message. He sometimes sends messages through Facebook, too. For the record, I usually respond to those.
His recent OkCupid messages are sweet, thoughtful, and romantic. About a month ago he sent an OkCupid message describing how he felt when we held hands at last year’s music festival. I didn’t respond.
Then, about 2 weeks ago, he sent me a Facebook message saying that he wanted to go on a date with me. He’s done this occasionally throughout the past year and I usually ignore. However, this time I just wanted to set the record straight and tell him I was seeing Hayden. He said he was disappointed but wished me well.
But… surprise! Today I got yet another message from him, this time on OkCupid, saying, “I don’t date San Francisco girls much but I want you to break that, Lauren. And I don’t want to just date you either” followed by a kissy emoticon.
I ignored. What the fuck??!
I know I’ve mentioned before that I’m Facebook friends with Colombian Hottie. He’s currently traveling in my ancestral hometown. I’m so jealous! A couple days ago, he posted stunning photos from Iceland. He’s been traveling a lot lately. I occasionally think about messaging him to ask how he’s doing but think that’d just give him the wrong idea so I don’t.
